From the Director - June 2023

As we welcome the warmer days of summer, camps, vacations, and popsicles, we may not be thinking of safety. Just like we teach our kids how to swim safely and put sunscreen on at the beach, adults need to think about how we teach them to protect themselves in new situations, like camp or a new friend’s house.

Simply asking if children can identify two or three safe adults when they have questions or want to have a conversation can open up opportunities for all kids. They may want to know why they have to wear bug spray or discuss a situation that arose that made them feel uncomfortable. It is an adult’s responsibility to create spaces for all children to have conversations proactively rather than reactively after something may have happened. Here is to a happy, healthy summer break!
